All 1.6 million PIP claims to be reviewed
Every single person receiving Personal Independence Payments (PIP) will have their claim reviewed, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has said.
All 1.6 million claims for the disability benefit will be reviewed, with around 220,000 people expected to receive more money.
This move comes after the DWP chose not to challenge a court ruling that said changes to PIP were discriminatory to people with mental health conditions.
The review could cost £3.7bn by 2023.
In March 2017, the Government changed the rules so that people with mental health issues who struggled to make journeys because of overwhelming distress were entitled to less support from PIP than other people with mobility difficulties.
However, the court has now ruled this unlawful, and the Government has accepted the judgement, which means the rule no longer applies.
Pritie Billimoria, head of communications at Turn2us, said: “A huge number of people with disabilities have been short changed by PIP, so it is vital that the Government corrects this quickly and thoroughly.
“However, the problems we are seeing with PIP are broad and systematic. The whole benefit needs a radical overhaul to reduce poverty and financial difficulties amongst disproportionately affected disabled individuals."
