UK braces itself for more severe weather

Share

Much of the UK is bracing itself for more severe weather this weekend. Authorities are saying temperatures could fall as low as -10° and bring almost two feet of snow in the Scottish Highlands, with flurries expected further south next week.

Earlier this week, the Met Office reissued severe weather warnings for Scotland and Northern Ireland, where more than three inches of rain fell, while official figures (link to BBC News item) showed that December 2015 was the wettest month in history.

Support from Turn2us

Turn2us recently ran a No Cold Homes campaign, with the aim of raising awareness of those struggling with energy costs and the support available to them. During the campaign, there were over 405,000 visits to our website, with 121,000 completed benefits calculations and 40,000 searches for charitable grants.

Turn2us Chief Executive Simon Hopkins commented:

"Cold homes kill and these new severe weather warnings show why raising awareness of the impact of cold weather is so important. There is help available but it’s vital it actually gets to those who need it.

"I would urge anyone concerned with how they, a relative or a friend, can get help to heat their home during this adverse weather to use the Benefits Calculator and Grants Search on our website and make sure they are receiving all the support available to them.

“We also have information on the various Energy Schemes (link to information guide) that energy companies provide. Similarly, if you are at risk of flooding, please see the support available from the various flood schemes (link to Turn2us news story about flooding) that have been launched.”
