Last reviewed 10 April 2023

I get PIP, what else can I get?

If you or your partner get any Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you could get the extra benefits and other help listed on this page.

Disability Premium

Premiums are extra amounts included in some benefits if you fit the criteria. The disability premium is an extra £39.85 per week for single people and £56.80 per week for couples.

If you or your partner is getting PIP, you can get a disability premium included in your Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or Housing Benefit.

If you are already getting full Housing Benefit, you will not get any more even if you qualify for a premium.

There is no disability premium paid within Universal Credit.

Working Tax Credit Disabled Worker element

If you get PIP, work 16 hours per week and you count as being at a disadvantage in getting a job, you can get an extra amount included in your Working Tax Credit worth up to £3,685 per year.

Exemption from the Benefit Cap

The Benefit Cap limits the amount of some benefits that families can get even if their entitlement would have been more. If you, your partner or your child who lives with you gets PIP, you are exempt from the cap.

Disabled person’s Railcard

A Disabled Person's Railcard gives you one-third off the cost of most train journeys. If you get PIP, you can buy one by contacting National Rail:

  • Online
  • Telephone: 0345 605 0525
  • Textphone: 0345 601 0132

You can collect a printed form from National Rail stations and return it by post to National Rail.

Bus travel with the National Entitlement Card (Scotland)

If you're a resident in Scotland and get Personal Independence Payment, you can get free bus travel with the National Entitlement Card. You can apply for the National Entitlement Card (Scotland) by contacting your local council.

Personal Independence Payment - PIP and Other Help - I get the daily living component of PIP, what else can I get?

Other help you can get when you're getting Personal Independence Payment.

I get the daily living component of PIP, what else can I get?

If you or your partner gets any rate of the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you could get the extra benefits and other help listed:

Severe Disability Premium

Premiums are extra amounts included in some benefits if you fit the criteria. The Severe Disability Premium is an extra £76.40 per week for each person (you or your partner) who qualifies.

If you or your partner is getting the daily living component of PIP and no one is claiming Carer's Allowance or Carer Element of Universal Credit for looking after you, and you are the only adult in the household or all the other adults also have a disability, you could get the Severe Disability Premium included in your Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). Read more about this premium on our Severe Disability Premium page

If you are getting contributory Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), you may also get a top-up of income-related ESA if you qualify for a Severe Disability Premium. This doesn't apply if you get New Style ESA.

Severe Disability Premium is not paid with Universal Credit. People already getting Severe Disability Premiums in their benefits who then claim Universal Credit are entitled to transitional protection.

Housing Benefit and Universal Credit non dependant deductions

Non dependant deductions can reduce your Housing Benefit or Universal Credit Housing Element entitlement. Check our non dependant page to see who counts as a non dependant. If you or your partner get the daily living component of PIP, your Housing Benefit or Universal Credit is not affected by non dependants.

Disregard from Council Tax

If you get the daily living component of PIP, you are severely mentally impaired and you have a doctor’s certificate that says you are severely mentally impaired, you do not count as an adult for Council Tax. This means that your partner or the person you live with could get 25% single person discount on their Council Tax bill even though you live with them. You can find more information in our Council Tax Discounts guide.

Carer’s Allowance

Carer’s Allowance may be available to someone who looks after you. If you are getting the daily living component of PIP, your carer looks after you for 35 hours per week and your carer earns less than £139 per week, they may be able to claim Carer’s Allowance of £76.75 per week. You can’t get the Severe Disability Premium included in your benefits if someone claims Carer’s Allowance for looking after you.

Universal Credit Carer’s element

The Carer’s element of Universal Credit may be available to someone who looks after you. If you are getting the daily living component of PIP and your carer looks after you for 35 hours per week, they may be able to claim the Carer’s element of up to £185.86 per month. You can’t get the Severe Disability Premium included in your benefits if someone claims the Carer’s element for looking after you.
